Technical Progress Report (Second Quarter)

During the B2024-2025 season, the organization Groupe d’Actions SOCIO-Agro- Pastorales (GASAP), in partnership with CIAT, is carrying out this basic seed multiplication project with the aim of supporting 250 women in the Territory of Kabare and 250 others in the Territory of Kalehe by granting them small packages for bean cultivation with a view to their self- sufficiency. To this end, GASAP has rented a field to sow 2 hectares of HM21-7 beans in the Bwengehera site, in Kabare territory, with a view to multiplying the Bio-fortified seeds to be made available to its beneficiaries after the training course it will be organizing for them in July 2025. The various activities organized by the GASAP organization as part of this project began in January with the search for the field to be leased. After contacting the local authorities and seed beneficiaries in the two territories of Kabare and Kalehe, the project was explained to them with a view to ensuring ownership, and mobilizing the workforce for the start-up of activities in the B crop season. At the end of January, work began on clearing the fields, monitoring activities, and carrying out the first and second plowing. In mid-March, we sowed the first hectare, while the second was sown on 4/4/2025 due to the war troubles in the area and the non-availability of agricultural inputs within the planned timeframe. Following the increase in rainfall and the appearance of weeds, we carried out the first weeding in March, followed by the second weeding in April for savings. Harvesting took place in June. At present, we are sorting to prepare for the distribution of the small packages, which will be preceded by the capacity-building stage.

organization,in partnership with CIAT-PABRA, is carrying out this basic seed multiplication project with the aim of supporting 250 women in the Kabare Territory and 250 others in the Kalehe Territory by providing them with small packets and and will follow up on the distribution of agricultural tools for bean cultivation with a view to empowering them. Before distributing the small 0.5kg packets to each beneficiary, training sessions were organized for them in their respective communities, covering various topics to prepare them not only on how to increase bean, vegetable production and marketing, but also on nutritional value and gender issues.Technical Progress Report (Third quarter)

BEAN CULTIVATION FOR WOMEN

Summary

During the B2024-2025 season, the organization Groupe d’Actions SOCIO-Agro-Pastorales in partnership with CIAT is carrying out this project with the aim of supporting 250 women in Kabare Territory and 250 others in Kalehe Territory in bean cultivation for their empowerment.

To this end, GASAP has rented a field to sow 2 hectares of HM21-7 beans at the Bwengehera site in Kabare territory, with a view to multiplying the Bio-fortified seeds to be made available to its beneficiaries after the training which will be organized for them in the second half of May to June.

At the end of January, the opening work began, with field clearing, monitoring of activities, first ploughing and second ploughing.

In mid-March, we planted the first hectare, while the second was planted at the beginning of April.

As rainfall intensified, and weeds began to appear, we carried out the first weeding in March, followed by the second in April to protect the crops from rodents.

At present, the seedlings are flowering and the pods are appearing. GASAP has identified beneficiaries in both areas, and we hope to organize training courses for them in the second half of May and June.

GASAP was created in Bukavu/South Kivu Province in 1997, and works mainly in the province of South Kivu, following an awareness on the part of a few ecclesiastical and lay leaders moved by compassion for vulnerable groups (women, widows, orphaned children, families in distress, etc.) victims of poverty and the 1996 war.
The initiative stems from numerous pastoral and social visits made in 1997 and 1998 by Pastor Théophile GAKUNZI NKINZI-NGABO to several hundred families from the Moyens and Hauts Plateaux of Uvira and Fizi who had found refuge in Bugarama in the Republic of Rwanda. Summary report of the exchange visit to Nairobi by the Director of GASAP from 26 June to 07 July 2023

The mission was part of the exchange of experience and mobilization of potential partners
involved mainly in the field of agribusiness in Kenya and eastern DRC. As soon as we arrived in Nairobi on the evening of June 27, 2023, we met Dr. James Obila, professor at the United States International University- Africa (USIU-A), thanks to the contact and facilitation of Mr. Nathan NIYO, his former student who had previously organized all the meetings including that of Prof. JAMES OBILA. It was at 20:00 spent around dinner, that we began the exchanges preceded by the brief mutual presentation, as well as the objectives of the mission of the GASAP delegation.

At the end of the exchanges, the latter put us in direct contact with Mr. Philippe, one of the executives of AGRA, Alliance for the green revolution in Africa (Alliance for a green revolution in Africa) which accompanies several farmers in the country. Ce travail a été réalisé dans le cadre d’introduire une nouvelle activité dans l’organisation. L’étude d’adaptabilité des deux variétés de Maïs au sol de karhongo et la multiplication de la culture de maïs. Cela étant, l’agronome de GASAP, MUHAMAGALE VOTA Johnson séjourne à Nyangezi depuis la date du 21 octobre 2023 jusqu’à présent pour poursuivre avec toutes les activités champêtres.
